Patchouli is a shrubby plant that reaches up to 1 meter in height, widespread allover Asia, China, India, and South America. Its odorous leaf is widely used in perfumery. Patchouli is one of the rare perfume components that has the exact connection with 'its time' – the 1960's – as patchouli was one of the main components of the, at that time very popular, chypre fragrances (Miss Dior, Clinique Aromatic Elixir, Yves Saint Laurent Kouros, etc.). The scent of patchouli is woodsy, green, with nuances of camphor and moss, so heavy, overpowering, with a strong earthy nuance that makes it dark and mysterious. Its interesting structure starts with sweet grassy notes, continues with rich winey heart and ends with balsamic woodsy nuance. Patchouli oil changes its character with time; fine rich fruity note makes the dry spicy nuance milder, and the whole composition becomes finer and thinner. In the perfume industry, apart from the chypre group, patchouli is used in oriental compositions as well. It matches other oils well.
